I have been forowing the strip for a long time now, and I have to say; I have absolutely NO idea what is going on here. I think perhaps a synopsis is needed.

Here's what I recall: Original story starts with Peony being abducted by Faden, to use for some sacrifice or something. At the time we thought Peony was Urtica's daughter, and Faden was your usual super-villain. We also learn that Urtica is a general badass, who has, among other things, convinced Acropetal to leave his Kingdom alone until his death. An amazing feat, since she was unstoppable and had no reason to even hear him out, nevermind leave his Kingdom alone, rather than enslave it to use for resources/slaves for her own purposes.

In this story (which doesn't necessarily fit every tiny detail of the previous one, as we have changed authors), we learn that ages before the abduction happened, before Urtica was made King, Urtica and Faden were actually friends (actually a love square with King's later wife and his other love interest, the queen of the assassins' guild or whatnot). We also learned that Urtica only became King because Acropetal killed his entire family and he was the only one left, and that Acropetal was enslaving kingdoms to use in her war to beat their gods or something like that. What actually got Acropetal to stop was that Urtica is the gods' 99th attempt for whatever purpose they have, and it has been agreed that the 100th attempt will be their last. So she now has a better plan: let Urtica live, so he can bear his heir, the 100th attempt, and she will use the last heir to strike the gods (or again, whatever/whoever she is trying to hurt).

Of course they can't let Acropetal succeed, so Urtica and co have a plan: Create a secret 100th heir (born by the assasins' queen away from the public eye) that Acropetal will never find, while the King's wife bears a decoy (whose father is not Urtica, but Faden) - the latter being Peonie. So when Urtica dies, Acropetal tries to succeed in her plans using the fake heir, and fails, having no idea why. To make sure nobody knows what they did, they will erase their own memories; one of lots of other crazy stuff that Faden is able to do because he is dabbling in forbidden magic. Here we see Urtica and Faden being the last two that still have their memories, and about to erase them. Urtica tells Faden he can keep his; Faden disagrees because he feels he will be unable to resist the forbidden magic, and become even more dangerous than Acropetal herself.

So it this what happened? Or did he abduct Peony to fake her death so that Acropetal wouldn't get her? Did he even know Peony was his daughter, or was that a memory he lost? And what happened to Peony's mother?

Thanks for this recap. I believe you are pretty much right on about all this.

Why thank you, I'm honoured - now if I can only remember stuff like eating lunch for example... :D

Thank you. I am not quite sure how I missed so much. I don't recall reading anything about Peony being Faden's daughter, let alone when. Perhaps I will go back and start at the beginning, if I ever find the time.

Ah, Peonie being Faden's daughter is just a few pages back (page 1066) - and initially I missed it, too (I read the page in a hurry between work, I think), then when I read the page again I went "wait, what?"

Initially I thought it was Urtica there, as it would be his first child that would be the 100th iteration; however, it makes much more sense for him to NOT have another child at all, because what if his first-born died? Then Peony WOULD become the 100th iteration, and their plans would be in vain. Best to have her be completely unrelated.

Is this information about to become important, or are we just drawing out a larger reveal or plot point?

It's a 'Fill in the blanks'

Okay, went back to the beginning because thought the giant square was the prison they took Faden to, and... that moment he recalls groping and licking his own daughter is going to be interesting (not to mention when P-Cups learns she was groped by her real dad... oh, and was about to be sacrificed by him)
