... is as reliable as planting a tree beside a sundial in your garden because you wanted to be able to sit in the shade while reading the time... (yes, that happened, to Queen Elizabeth II no less!)

Also, the further a sundial is from its intended location, the less accurate it becomes.

For a mobile sundial, some sort of compass for calibration could also be useful.

It's more about the angles between the sun, face and gnomon, how far north/south the sundial is, etc.
I had to make an accurate sundial when I was doing astrophysics many years ago. Implementing the Equation of Time for a practical application at a specific latitude is not for the faint of heart.
